Meander is a space for documentation and experimentation within our website, a place to reflect on our projects and artists, as well as a way to explore intersections between those works, artists, and themes we study under our mission (Japanese experimental moving image works made in 1950s-1980s), and those that fall outside of our mission’s specific framework of timeframe, genres, and nationality.
Meander may take multiple forms including essays, introductions to artists and their work, online screening programs, or special digital projects. Offerings in Meander may suggest oblique angles from which to see CCJ’s mission-specific works, artists, histories, or practices.
We are extremely pleased to announce the public rollout of the Database Prototype. The project has been part of CCJ’s discussions since it started its activities in 2015, with initial discussions with the Japanese Advisory Group in 2016, followed by a series of meetings with the Working Group members that continued to refine the prototype.

CCJ is excited to partner with Kohei Ando, our Monthly Membership featured artist for the months of January through April. Ando was born in Beijing, China on 1 February 1944. He received a bachelor's degree from Waseda University's Faculty of Science and Technology, then went on to study at L'Ecole Centrale in Paris. He produced experimental films for Shuji Terayama's theater company, and in 1968, using a 16mm camera he purchased with Terayama, Ando produced his first film, Oh! My Mother. He is the recipient of awards at numerous international film festivals, and his works are included in collections at major art museums and film libraries around the world.

Star Waars! is a charming parody of Star Wars, familiar faces (to Japanese) of Japanese stars growl at the camera like Leo the Lion.
My Friends, in My Address Book is a film made for the 100 Feet Festival, the work is a filmic address book featuring Ando’s friends. For each 1 foot of film, a friend appears holding a postcard with their address written.
We are very excited to collaborate with Gulliver to produce this original tote bag. 18” wide and 14.5” tall, the bag is made of durable natural cotton canvas. We are accepting pre-orders now, with shipments starting in mid-January. The tote bag is $40 + shipping and taxes.
