January, 2017
Collaborative Cataloging Japan (CCJ) has been awarded a research grant of $50,000 from the Andy Warhol Foundation to proceed with its Japanese Expanded Cinema Research Project. The project will be led by co-researchers Go Hirasawa (Meiji Gakuin University) and Julian Ross (University of Westminster & International Film Festival Rotterdam), and directed by Ann Adachi-Tasch (CCJ).
Through its Andy Warhol Foundation Grant-supported research project, the findings will provide the supporting ground for a proposed 2019 exhibition on Japanese Expanded Cinema. This project has two overarching themes:
1) the historical study of Japanese expanded cinema and its context within the contemporary international Expanded Cinema movement, and
2) a technical study of conserving, restaging, and preserving obsolete media art works as they relate to this project.
This project will support preservation and interpretation of the works, and communicate direction for further study.
